Research theme

Relationship between egg and heart disease risk

research method

This observational study targets 500,000 men and women aged 30 to 79 years.
The research design is as follows.

  1. Researchers gather participants between 2004 and 2008
  2. They ask participants for egg consumption
  3. They continue to investigate participants' health changes over an average of 8.9 years
  4. They investigated the relationship between heart disease data identified during that period and egg consumption. (About 80,000 heart diseases were confirmed, of which about 10,000 people died)

research result

It was found that those who eat one egg per day have a lower risk of heart disease than those who rarely eat eggs.
Specifically, the following trends were revealed.

  • 26% lower risk of stroke
  • 28% lower risk of death from stroke
  • 18% lower risk of death from heart disease

comment

Those who had a reduced risk of heart disease in this study averaged 5.32 eggs per week.
What happens if you eat more than that is not mentioned in this study.

Also, since this is an observational study, eating eggs does not necessarily reduce heart disease.
A closer look at the data from this study shows the following trends for those who do not eat eggs.

  • Many smokers (the reason is unknown)
  • Many low-income people

It seems difficult to eliminate these effects.

Nonetheless, the data from this study suggests that “Eggs seem to have no health problems if eaten every day”.
